Life in the Middle Ages- M. Giacopelli #3

Dearest Patrick,

Last time I wrote to you I was basically on my death bed. I thought that would be the last time one of my letters would be sent to you. As you know I was assailed by an extreme case of the black plague. Miraculously, I overcame this illness. I truly believe our prayers made me fight this disease and with the help of God beat it. It disgusts me to think about my state when I had the disease, as I was covered with red round shaped marks all over my body. My fever was overbearing and I had a constant feeling of nausea as I vomited often. I had a multitude of bumps on my body which began to split and puss out blood. This was the most painful feeling I've ever experienced as it really was ALL over my body. I lost a tremendous amount of weight, as i was almost emaciated and always felt light headed due to the loss of blood coming from my body. It really is a mystery how I recovered. I stayed in my bed for weeks, and when the doctor finally came he gave me medication. After a week of taking this prescription i saw improvement. I thank God and I thank the doctor for saving my life. I am hoping to see you soon.

Yours truly,

Matthew
